Grades are an important thing for us as students because they determine if we pass or fail and they make or break post-secondary applications. However, they should never affect how we feel about ourselves.
Each one of us has so much potential, even if we don’t see it. We are all capable of amazing things, and we are all destined to do those things. The biggest hurdle in us reaching our goals and our potential is a lack of self-worth. From my own personal experience, I can see that a lot of our self-worth can come from the grades we get at school. Sure, grades do matter, but they should never be the single most important thing in your life. We should look to the things that bring us joy, like our health or our relationships as the things that are most important to us. Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to do well in school and to get good grades, but life is about so much more than that.
The whole idea that grades should be important to us students does have some truth to it, we just make sure that marks aren’t the thing we value most in life.
This is especially true when we get marks that we personally aren’t happy with. We shouldn’t look at those situations as personal failures or think to ourselves that we aren’t good enough (BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE A LIE). It’s important to look at those situations as learning opportunities to understand why we didn’t do as well as we hoped and how we can take steps to do better next time.
Grades are important for us as students because they factor into job applications and into post-secondary applications, if we choose to pursue those things. For grades, it’s always a plus when we do as well as we hoped, and it’s important for us to strive to do better with every assignment we do, but it’s important to know that there are things in life that matter much more.
Things happen and we won’t always do as well as we want to, so don’t get stuck on the idea that your success in school reflects you self-worth.
School is important for our success in the future, but it isn’t the only thing that matters in our lives. There is so much out there that gives us meaning and that gives us self-worth, like our families and our friends. It’s easy to feel like your grades reflect your value as a person but trust me, you are worth so much more than that.
