Looking presentable and having well-fitted clothes to wear is one way many of us feel confident and ready to take on the day. With winter break upon us and Boxing Day sales soon in full effect, it’s tempting to refresh our wardrobes with new clothes, but this process can add up to become expensive as average students.
In this post, I will share some tips and tricks on how to revamp your closet in an affordable and practical way.
Tip #1: Organize and browse through your clothing collection
Before you start impulsively purchasing new clothing it is important to dig through those closets and drawers so that you know what you already own. Through this you will understand your style as you will know what your staples are, what you need to get rid of, and what you want or need to complete your wardrobe.
Tip #2: Be careful about online shopping
Shopping online is a popular and convenient way to shop in today’s technologically driven world. You could purchase from stores that you may not have access to in your local mall or find more sales and deals to take advantage of. However, online shopping does have some disadvantages. For example, you can’t try on the clothes and sometimes the fit or colour of the item is not accurately displayed on the website images. The shipping costs can also add up and become unexpectedly high. Read reviews and ratings of the brand or item you’re thinking of buying to make sure that your purchase is worth your money, as making a return can also be more of a hassle when you’ve purchased online.
Tip #3: Visualize your outfits when shopping
To assure that you make enough use out of a piece of clothing, you need to visualize the clothes you try on with the clothes you already own.
Tip #4: Donate or sell your old clothes to clear up your closet
Selling your clothes is an idea to consider, as you can earn some money while you get rid of clothes you no longer need. Online companies such as Letgo (link text to: https://ca.letgo.com/en), Poshmark (link text to: https://poshmark.ca/), and Depop (link text to: https://www.depop.com/) allow you to sell your clothes. Plato’s closet is another retailer which buys and sells lightly used second hand clothing. This is the perfect way to find new clothes for an affordable price and also regain some money for the clothes you no longer need.
Tip #5: Explore thrift stores and thrift shopping
Thrift stores are great places to choose from a wider variety of second hand clothes. Large thrift store chains such as Value Village or Goodwill carry a variety of vintage, basic, and trendy styles to choose from. This is a great way to find your style at an affordable price and simultaneously help the environment by reusing clothes.
