The importance of sleep

Author: Chaten

Most of us teen’s don’t really see the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. During the day, all we want to do is hang out with our friends, which usually leaves the few hours at night time for us to finish our school work. It’s kind of a big problem, as only small amount of teenagers say that they sleep for a decent amount each night.

Not getting enough sleep can cause some serious problems like having a reduced attention span and being fatigued throughout the day. There’s also a big problem with the way that us teens think about sleep. For example, it’s almost “cool” to not get enough of it. You could walk through the halls of your school and hear “Ugh, I only got like 7 hours of sleep last night and I cannot focus” and another student might say “Really I only got 6 and I’m doing perfectly fine.”

The mentality that not getting sleep is okay or that it’s not doing us any harm is genuinely wrong and is only going to hurt us in the long run.

A lack of sleep is one of the single biggest reasons for inattentiveness among teens and children. It’s been proven that not getting enough sleep limits your ability to learn, listen, and concentrate at school. You might even forget important information like names, numbers and your homework.

How to improve your sleep

Although a lot of these negatives seem scary there are a lot of ways that you can try and improve the amount of sleep you get each day. The first major thing you can do is establish a set time that you are going to sleep each night and then a fixed time that you’ll be waking up. It’s a pretty easy thing to do during the school days, as the time you wake up is rarely going to change, so aim to go to sleep 8-9 hours before you have to wake up. During the weekends, try to aim for the same amount of sleep, but try shifting your sleeping times a little later so that you aren’t waking up at 7am on a Saturday.

Getting enough sleep isn’t a hard thing to do, it mostly just involves spending a little less time with our friends, or a little less time on Netflix, and using that time to go to sleep earlier. There are so many great reasons for us to sleep more, but ultimately, it simply feels awesome to get a good night’s sleep.

Even though we all have a lot of stuff to do, and it feels like there just isn’t enough time sleep is incredibly important. It’s important for our ability to focus throughout the day, and to help us absorb information we get at school.

Odds are that if you’re reading this you probably don’t get enough sleep each night, so try it out for the next few days and see what the differences a good night’s sleep can make for you.
