Peer Talk

I feel constantly sad and have felt this way since I was little.

I want to be happy but my parents are very unaccepting and I’m scared to tell them how I feel. I feel depressed and have thoughts of suicide and self harm.

Sadness can be a deeply lonely and overwhelming feeling, especially if we’ve been battling it for so long.

It can be even more difficult if we feel like those closest to us don’t understand why we’re feeling that way or if we don’t know how to explain it to them. We may start to think that sadness is the only emotion we can feel no matter how hard we try but we want you to know that’s not the case. Sometimes, that type of deep sadness is out of your control. It’s important to talk to your doctor if you’re feeling this way because it could be a hormonal issue which is pretty common when someone feels constantly sad. Telling your doctor may also help you open up to someone about how you are feeling, and it sounds like you’ve been keeping it in for so long.

Talking to your parents is always encouraged, but if you don’t think that conversation will go well, try talking to another adult about it.

Who else would you feel comfortable talking to? Is there a teacher or counselor at school you trust? If so, you might find it very helpful to talk to them! Sometimes, getting another perspective or even help with approaching the people you love can make a world of difference.

When people are feeling very sad and depressed, they may engage in self harm or even suicide to cope with how they are feeling. If you are feeling suicidal or engage in self harm to cope, it could be incredibly important to tell someone.

Remember, you can always talk to ConnecTeen because we can help you practice talking to someone in your life about how you feel or even connect you to resources like counselling.

Depending on your age and situation, some counseling programs let you see them without letting your parents know. For more information or to just talk it out, you can text us at 587-333-2724 or chat with us from 5-10pm Monday to Friday and 12-10pm on weekends, or call us at 403-264-8336 anytime. We will always be here for you and won’t judge how you’re feeling- even if you struggle with being happy. We want to listen to your struggles and try to help you as best we can.
