3 tips to handle a job while you’re in school

Author: Diana Prince

Young people like us are often short of money. Whether we spend it on school, rent or coffee we could often use some extra cash. The most obvious solution when we need money is to get a job. Being employed can be really good, as you’ll make money, friends and it will look great on your resume. Here are a few things that can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.

1. Have fun at work!

Students don’t often get to do super fancy jobs. We usually end up folding clothes, washing dishes, or shelving merchandise. Because of that, work can end up being a real drag, and you can start to dread every shift. However, the harms of that aren’t just a couple boring hours. When we start to dread something that is that regular in our lives, it can really take a toll on our mental health. Try to make some friends or create a technique that makes your work more interesting and enjoyable.

2. Make sure you know your rights.

Many employers are perfectly nice and will want to treat their employees well. Yet, some of them can try to manipulate the situation to benefit themselves. As young people, we are more susceptible to this. Employers know that we need the money and don’t necessarily have a lot of employment options. As such, it’s even more important that you research what you’re entitled to as an employee. For example, if you’re 12-14 years old you can’t work more than two hours on a school night. Read more.

3. Don’t overwork yourself!

Sometimes we really need the money and we have to just put ourselves through some really tough stuff to pay rent or help out our family. We also sometimes just want some extra cash to spend on things we don’t really need. It’s at that point that you have to be really careful. If you start taking lots of shifts at work to earn some extra money then you can quickly hurt your schoolwork, relationships and your own health. Make sure to check in with yourself every once in a while to make sure you’re taking on the amount of work that you should be.

Hopefully these tips help guide you in dealing with your job. Working and earning money can be a really stressful and overwhelming thing, but it can also be really fun and rewarding. Always remember to take care of yourself and do what’s best for you!
