The COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a very challenging year for most of us. And it is completely valid if your feelings about this year have been largely negative. Some days are just going to be bad days no matter what, and that’s okay. But there are many benefits to trying to maintain a positive outlook.

Medical research suggests that people with positive outlooks live longer and healthier lives. It helps increase productivity and abilities to work with other people. A positive attitude helps us overcome obstacles and reach goals. During this difficult time, I decided to think about some of the ways we have benefited from the pandemic!

Ability to spend more time at home. This an obvious one and at this point you are probably bored of being home, but, being grateful for your time at home is important. Before COVID-19, think about the times when you craved time to relax at home, away from school, work and other commitments. This pandemic could have been a way for you to get your home life together. From cleaning your room to building better relationships with family members, your time at home has not been a waste!

Trying out new things or things you would not usually do. Many of us spent a lot of time trying to find new activities outside of home. Now you have had the opportunity to look for things that you enjoy doing from convenience of your home. Cooking, painting, or playing an instrument are only some of the skills you may have developed. When the pandemic comes to an end, you can continue to build off these hobbies and habits!

Finding new technologies or ways to become organized. For many of us, the significance of technologies like Zoom and Microsoft Teams was non-existent in our lives. However, the pandemic has forced us to discover and fully use these applications. Now, you have more ways to connect with family members and friends who are far away from you.

Dealing with uncertainty and overcoming challenges. This pandemic has made you an adaptable and stronger human. The world has evolved greatly and the fact that you were able to adjust to those changes is a great accomplishment!

You have a chance to reflect, be grateful, and be empathetic towards others. The pandemic has hit many of us hard and we continue to face challenges. Not being able to see friends or go about our normal ways of life has been disheartening. Together, we should identify the things we are grateful for and not take them for granted. For example, health care and other frontline workers emerged as critical people in our safety; many of us did not realize their significance earlier. The pandemic gave us a chance to slow down and look around us.
