Dealing with anxiety

Anxiety is a normal human feeling that all of us experience at certain points during our lives. Whether it is due to a big exam coming up, an important interview or an event that we are dreading. It can be beneficial by keeping us motivated, excited about different aspects of life and at times protects us from harm. But just like anything else, too much of this feeling can have a negative impact on our lives, especially when it starts to affect the way that we see ourselves and influence the decisions that we make.

Before I continue, I think it’s important to note that occasional anxiety is normal and what I’m referring to today. If you experience frequent intense and persistent anxiety and worry over everyday situations, that may be a symptom of something more serious. Talk to your doctor about it.

What can we do to help ourselves when we’re experiencing anxiety?

Dealing with anxiety is not an easy process or a fast one. There are no magic potions or secret recipes that will prevent you from experiencing anxiety, but there are ways of dealing with it. It can be stressful to go through the emotions that anxiety brings, but we shouldn’t try to fight the feeling. Instead we need to try to understand it. By allowing ourselves to feel the adrenaline, and making an effort to understand what we feel, we can learn how to control it. We can’t manage something that we know nothing about and we fear greatly. We need to understand what causes us to feel anxious – both psychological and physiological reasons.

When we talk about the physiological aspect of anxiety we acknowledge that it is a response to danger or any situation that seems threatening. And going outside your comfort zone can feel dangerous, but it’s also how we learn, grow and experience new things. There are breathing techniques, coping methods for relaxation and options for physical activity that can help us lower our stress levels. But keep in mind that anxiety is also affected by what goes on through our minds, therefore learning how to keep a positive mindset and control our negative thoughts can also help to reduce stress.

Finding coping methods that work for you and having supportive friends and family or just anyone who you trust and enjoy being around can help you when experiencing anxiety.

Anxiety is a normal feeling that everyone experiences. It can be hard to deal with, and in some cases, more severe than others. Learning how to accept our emotions and understanding why we feel this way can help us find ways to cope with these feelings. If you think the anxiety you experience is outside the realm of normal, talk to a parent, guardian or your doctor about it.
