Good nutrition habits during quarantine

Since we are at home, we may struggle with having balanced and nutritious meals. This is because we have been thrown out of our usual routines, so we may eat more unhealthy meals or find ourselves snacking more than usual. It’s okay to eat snacks and food that isn’t considered nutritious, but you may find overindulging in that kind of food lowers your energy and can even affect your mental health.

If you’d like to eat healthier here are some tips on maintain good nutrition habits at home.

Tip 1: Buy what you need and cook at home.

Firstly, it is important that you or your house members do not engage in panic buying. This could be a reason for you to over consume unnecessary amounts of food and more importantly it is unfair to others. If you are not in charge of getting groceries, it might be a good idea to have a conversation with all your house members to assure that you only get what you need. Furthermore, try to make as many meals at home so that you know what you are eating, and you can also save some money.

Tip 2: Watch where you eat.

Being at home might cause you to become too comfortable. Eating meals on the sofa or on your bed may seem appealing, but research shows that this may cause you to eat more than you need. Eat at the table and eat mindfully so you hear your body when it indicates that it’s full. If you do overindulge from time to time, that’s okay, you don’t need to beat yourself up over it.

Tip 3: The balanced diet.

The key to a balanced diet is simple. There are four main food groups and we should include in our diet: protein, carbohydrates, dairy/alternatives, and fruits and vegetables. It is easy for sugary or salty processed foods to imbalance your diet. Eating such foods may seem appealing as you spend day after day at home and it’s okay if you eat snacks sometimes. If you are trying not to eat unhealthy snacks, simply not purchasing them could be the best way to avoid the temptation. Treat yourself, but in moderation if you want to see the benefits of nutritious eating.

Tip 4: Staying hydrated and exercising should always be on the menu.

A healthy diet paired with regular exercising is the best combination to keep you energetic and healthy. Drinking plenty of water is important for the body’s general well-being and research shows that drinking water can prevent overeating. Exercise can be anything from going for a walk to a rigorous HIIT workout on YouTube, any activity in your day is better than no activity.

I hope that you follow these tips and maybe improve your quarantine eating habits. Our food choices have a significant effect on our mood and general well-being. During difficult times like this, we should make sure we take care of ourselves both inside and out!
