Peer Talk

It’s always said that anyone can recover from mental illness if they are willing to but what if I’m not willing to? What should I do?

Hey, thanks for your question, the answer to a question like that isn’t always a simple one. Mental illness is a tough thing to deal with because it isn’t as simple as it may seem. I can imagine why you wouldn’t be willing to take steps towards recovery. Mental illness can be complicated and confusing, especially if you’re dealing with a few different types such as anxiety and depression. Feeling like you can’t get better is extremely common. It sounds like you don’t want to get better but I’m wondering if you’ve ever spoken to a professional about this? A lot of the time mental illness is related to a chemical imbalance in our bodies and brains. This has nothing to do with you as a person but all about biology. Sometimes we don’t get enough of what we need to feel ‘normal’ or be healthy. I encourage you to reach out to a professional like a doctor who could look into your specific needs.

Another aspect to feeling healthier is to engage in self-care. This mean that you take care of yourself mentally and physically. Some suggestions for self-care include, exercise, proper nutrition, and good sleep. These among other things, are important to helping deal with mental health. Sometimes we just need to get through the day and thinking about it that way can be more helpful than wondering if you will always feel this way. Take one day at a time and know that your recovery process will be specific to you. We cannot answer this question well because we don’t know exactly what is going on for you, what you’ve tried or who you’ve spoken with. We try our best to answer your questions but sometimes it’s easier for us to have a conversation with you to talk about your specific situation.

It is important though to try and reach out for help before deciding whether to continue with a recovery process or to not do so.
