How can I be happy again?

Life has so many ups and downs. Sometimes, it seems as if the good times are fleeting, and the bad last forever.

The most important thing in the rough times is to take care of yourself, so that when you are in a happier place, there are minimal negative consequences. Eat regularly, make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need. Sleep properly, too, to let your body heal itself. The most important thing is to make your way through this time, with the least possible side effects.

In times of depression, there are often long term causes that combined, create this feeling. Some of the first steps people take to combating this include seeking counseling. It may feel strange to talk to a stranger about your personal and intimate feelings, but having a third party to talk about your feelings to can clear your mind about things, and offer a fresh perspective about your situation, and maybe options about how to deal with your situation. In addition, professional help can offer individualized coping mechanisms to help you through rough times.

Other ways to help you make your way through this time include writing your emotions out. This can help to sort out your feelings in a more concrete fashion, as it is very easy to get lost in your own head, deliberating things. Getting your mind off things is also very helpful. When things get particularly hard, you may need to simply make it through to the next day, to have a fresh start. You can read a book, or watch a movie, or start a new show to get lost in another universe for a bit. Otherwise, you could occupy yourself somehow, by maybe drawing, playing a musical instrument, or picking up a new hobby. Another way to escape for a bit is to sleep.

Sometimes, when there is nothing you can do to change your situation, the only way to help things is to let time pass.

In order to do that, it’s important to have a variety of coping mechanisms to allow this to happen. Of course, the ConnecTeen line is always available for you to contact, in case things get particularly tiring, or in case you just need to talk.
