Peer Talk

Is it ever okay to just give up? Like give up on life and just kill myself?

Hi, thanks so much for asking this question. We are often so caught up in our day to day lives that we sometimes forget to talk about our emotions, feelings, and how we’re doing overall. So thank you for taking that brave first step and opening up this conversation.

Emotions are hard to understand, and many times, we don’t understand why we feel a certain way. If you are dealing with suicidal thoughts, I want you to know that you are not alone. I want you to know that what you’re feeling right now is 100% valid, and that it’s okay to have suicidal thoughts. It’s okay to be in a place where you feel like giving up because it’s not uncommon to be dealing with these things. What is important when anyone is feeling this way to reach out to people you trust or to services like us. It can feel so heavy to carry around these thoughts by yourself but you don’t have to do it alone. Sometimes, talking it out helps or even writing it out.

When we feel like giving up entirely, there’s usually a reason that triggered us to feel this way. Has something happened recently that pushed you over the edge? It can be so overwhelming when we feel like there’s too much going on. But if you’ve ever felt like this before, reflecting on helped and what didn’t could potentially offer new perspective to your situation. When we go through difficult times we forget how bad it was when we are faced with something new. Reminding ourselves that we are strong can be really helpful.

Getting support for our mental health is so much easier said than done. Taking that first step to let someone know that you feel like giving up feels terrifying because it’s hard to be vulnerable. However, talking to someone who makes you feel safe could completely change the course of your life. When people feel suicidal, we sometimes don’t think about the people who love and care about us, and the impact suicide can have on their lives. We are not here to pass judgement on whether or not it is okay to give up on life, however, we want to remind you that suicide can cause a tremendous amount of pain and hurt to those around you. If you want to talk, we really encourage you to reach out to us through our 24/7 phone number at 403-264-TEEN (8336), or through our chat lines.

Here at ConnecTeen, we’re here to support you, and we’re more than willing to listen to your story.  If you’re struggling with something like depression or anxiety, it might be a good idea to talk to a doctor about it too.  Apart from reaching out to the people around you, self-care is also really important if you’re going through a difficult situation. Self-care can be as small as drinking enough water every day, to making sure you’re getting enough sleep or doing something you really enjoy. If you have suicidal thoughts, it’s also a great idea to distract yourself by taking a walk, listening to music, or watching TV. Again, thanks so much for reaching out to us, and don’t hesitate to contact us again. If you feel that you’re in immediate danger, please call our phone line, and also don’t hesitate to call 911 either.
