Is suicide selfish?

Hey, that’s a really good question, and we’re glad that you reached out to us. Suicide is not easy to talk about, so it’s great that you’re taking that step and asking these questions. If you’re having thoughts of suicide, we want you to know that you’re not alone, and that it’s not uncommon to have thoughts of ending your life. Every feeling that you experience is completely valid, so we want you to know that it’s normal to have suicidal thoughts, especially if you’re going through a tough time.

Suicide is a personal choice, and it’s not our place to pass judgement on whether it is selfish or not.  We do believe, however, that suicide can have a significant impact on the people around you and cause an incredible amount of hurt and pain. Sometimes when we feel so low, we often don’t think of the people who love and care about us and the impact suicide could have on them. Talking about suicide can be a scary thing, and many times, it’s difficult to start a conversation on it. If you’re having any suicidal thoughts, we encourage you to reach out to us through our chat lines, or to call our 24/7 phone line at 403-264-TEEN (8336). We would love to chat with you.

It’s super important to find support from those around you. Do you have parents or trusted friends you can talk to about your feelings? It may also be a good idea to talk to a doctor if you’re struggling with things like depression or anxiety.

Remember that self-care is also very important when you’re going through a tough time. This can mean anything from getting a good night’s rest, to drinking enough water, to having a healthy diet. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, it would be a good idea to do something to distract yourself, like watching TV, listening to music, or doing something you love.

Again, suicide is not an easy topic to discuss, and lots of people are afraid of opening up a conversation about it, so it’s really awesome that you took that step to reach out to us. We’re not in a position to judge whether or not suicide is selfish, because it is a personal choice, however, if you’re going through a tough time or having troubles dealing with your emotions, remember to reach out to us, and those who care about you. If you feel that you’re in immediate danger, please call our phone line, and also don’t hesitate to call 911 either.
